From Fatherless To Fatherhood

A Father explains Coming Up vs. Being Raised

Kainon is a father of two boys whose childhood is quite different than his was. He credits his wife, their mother, for helping expose his sons to as many experiences as possible.

Raising young men to own a strong sense of self begins with parents, and in this case, a father who is prepared to help them navigate the challenges they’ll face along the way. When it comes to parenting, Kainon makes clear to his sons, “You’re not coming up, you’re being raised.”

Elle Varner says My Father is My Rock

In a world filled with many women using selfies and half-naked pictures to seek the approval of others, it’s refreshing to look at brothers who are raising daughters to understand where their beauty and confidence and power truly lies.  Elle Varner  engages in a heart-to-heart discussion with her father, Jimmy; giving us a look into why he is “her rock.”

“I discovered with Elle that when her mother would leave and she would start crying, if I would take her in the car with me and play some music that I was working on, that would calm her right down,” Jimmy remembers fondly. “So from a very early on, from months old, she was riding shotgun with pops in the car working on music.”

Andre Royo wants his daughter to be a good person.

Actor, Andre Royo, wants his daughter to be a good person.

Stories of absent fathers have become commonplace in the narrative of the Black community. While there’s a tendency to avoid consistent conversations about the real reasons why so many men are absent from their children’s lives, even more damaging are the limited opportunities to provide examples of fathers who foster high quality relationships with their children and families in ways that positively impact our community.

We caught up with Actor, Andre Royo -best known for his portrayal of the character, “Bubbles” on The Wire – and his teenage daughter during a sunny day in Los Angeles, California. His daughter describes him as “a role model” who is “a friend and your family”.  Andre compares being a good father to listening, as in acting. All-and-all, Royo explains, “at the end of the day in my heart, I want my daughter to be a good person!”

Have we failed to consider how their examples can inform and inspire those fathers, children, and families who are lost? Or does it even matter?
